Video and 3D Gait Analysis

Resonance Motion+ Lab at Capital Podiatry Centre offers state of the art technology for gait evaluation and biomechanical analysis.

Katie is our Motion+ Lab expert, utilising dual camera 2D, as well as 3D video gait analysis: a system which allows us to use 3D data to quantify the clinical picture. This 3D data from your running or walking is measured against a statistical ideal, which assists us to identify the cause of any biomechanical imbalances which have the potential to cause pain or dysfunction during running or walking. This tool is helpful both for runners and walkers alike who wish to make changes to their gait to improve efficiency, reduce their risk of injury in the future, and be secure in the knowledge that they are being guided by experts in this field.

We also use this data when assessing the cause of any foot, leg, or back pain/injury to help in understanding how this may be playing a role in your pain and injury, and how we might be able to make changes to help you get better.

Pain and Injury

There are many factors that can cause foot and leg pain, and injuries. These may present in the form of foot, arch or heel pain, calf or Achilles pain, shin pain, knee pain, hip or back pain, and are often linked to postural or structural imbalances.

Some common conditions we can help with are:

  • Forefoot pain
  • General foot pain
  • Heel pain and Plantar fasciitis
  • Bunions and Hammer or claw toes
  • Sports injuries such as ankle sprains, fractures, tendonitis
  • Children’s growth injuries such as Calcaneal Apophysitis (severs), Osgood Schlatter
  • Arthritis

We will assess your biomechanics, gait, joint movement, strength, and footwear, and provide you with a clear plan to help improve your pain and reduce the risk of future issues.

Your management plan might include strengthening and stretching exercises, strapping, gait modifications, footwear recommendations, orthotic therapy, dry needling, and/or Shockwave Therapy. We’re also able to refer you to another health provider such as a  surgeon should we need to.

All our podiatrists are ACC registered and simple bracing as part of the management plan following an accident.

Orthotics

Foot orthotics are prescribed customised inserts that are worn in your shoes to aid in the management of postural or structural imbalances to improve your function and reduce pain. Orthotics are manufactured using a range of techniques and materials and will vary depending on your needs, such as providing support for the foot by distributing pressure or force on the foot or body during standing, walking, or running. As such, they are often used by the general population as well as athletes to relieve symptoms of a variety of soft tissue and musculoskeletal conditions.

All our podiatrists are dedicated to ensuring the final orthotic product provides optimal functional management and the best patient outcomes. We do this by ensuring we have completed a thorough examination process including intensive non-weightbearing and weightbearing biomechanical assessment, movement analysis, body alignment, video gait analysis, and ensuring we understand your specific needs to provide specific solutions – whether they be for your business footwear, running, cycling, netball, rugby, or other footwear or sporting needs.

Resonance and Capital Podiatry Centre are proud to partner with GO-Labs the industry leaders in New Zealand orthotics. Once our biomechanical investigation data has then been collated, we make a cast or model of our patient ’s feet or lower limb. We utilise several casting techniques including weightbearing and non-weightbearing casts, in conjunction with our leading-edge 3D infrared scanning system.

Each of these techniques are customized for the individual patient and gives us precision in the design of the orthotic to best functionally manage or accommodate the pain or injury that our patient has presented with.

Being part of Resonance, means all our orthotic designs are peer-reviewed by our fellow podiatry colleagues, ensuring the utmost quality of the final product and the best outcomes for our patients.

Bracing

At Capital Podiatry Centre we have a range of off-the-shelf ready-made bracing available to us for foot or ankle injuries.

We can also provide specialised, custom-made foot and ankle bracing options for our patients.

The EXO-L is not a conventional brace or tape designed to fix the joint in place. Instead, it works as an anatomical safety belt for the ankle, cleverly imitating human anatomy.

Similar to a seat belt in a car, the strap only tightens when a specific, risky motion occurs. This supports the natural function of the ligament and prevents problematic movement when you are at risk of spraining your ankle.

It uses a bracing system combining an anchoring strap to the shoe, which then connects to the moulded support across the ankle. The straps can be tensioned for the desired support level.

The EXO-L UP is specifically designed for those suffering foot drop, increasing mobility while remaining subtle and low profile. It includes an additional fully adjustable cord for achieving the required amount of toe lift and is more durable than other ‘up’ braces on the market.

Helpful for those with neurological disorders such as drop foot, cerebral palsy and spina bifida.

Arizona AFO braces play a key role in the treatment of many pathologies including PTTD, ankle osteoarthritis, Charcot foot, Achilles tendonitis, drop foot, CMT, knee or ankle pathology due to sports or occupational causes. With clinical research behind their effectiveness, we are confident in these devices keeping you on the GO – because ‘restoring mobility restores life.’

Arizona AFO, Inc. is committed to helping individuals achieve a better quality of life. Someone who suffers from a serious foot disorder understands that restoring mobility can be life changing. Stairs are no longer mountains. A walk across the room — by yourself — represents freedom.

The Arizona AFO line is used by Resonance clinicians to help their patients increase mobility, reduce pain, avoid surgery, and provide a better quality of life.

RPW Shockwave

We are committed to improving your comfort and function here at Capital Podiatry Centre, and the RPW Shockwave machine has allowed us to continue to advance our skills in helping you to become pain-free using this non-invasive leading-edge technology. RPW Shockwave Therapy, is a non-invasive treatment to help improve chronic musculoskeletal conditions (where pain has persisted for longer than 3 months) such as heel pain (plantar fasciitis), and Achilles tendinopathy. Therapeutic Shockwaves were introduced as a medical treatment for eliminating kidney stones 20 years ago; one side effect discovered was accelerated tissue healing in the same area, as well as increased bone density (increased bone healing).

It is a very successful treatment option especially when other conservative options have failed. The literature and clinical evidence report patients achieve an improvement in pain and function, with up to 80% showing significant improvement or complete resolution of their symptoms after six treatments.

RPW Shockwave Therapy uses compressed air to generate a radial pressure wave; this is mechanical energy that is converted into chemical energy for stimulation and regeneration of healthy tissue.

RPW Shockwave Therapy is designed to make chronically inflammed tissues acute again, resetting the body’s natural biological healing response. Along with triggering the bodies healing response, it can also help to alleviate pain, improve movement, improve circulation, reduce muscle tightness and painful trigger points (muscle knots). It’s as easy as one treatment per week, for 3-6 treatments.

If you, or someone you know, is frustrated with pain, get in touch to see if RPW Shockwave Therapy could be right for you. Often Shockwave therapy is used in conjunction with strapping, orthotics, strengthening exercises and footwear advice.

Myofascial Dry Needling

Myofascial Dry Needling, or Superficial Dry Needling, is used to help relieve trigger points (muscle knots) and can help ease soft tissue disorders and chronic pain. A fine sterile needle is inserted into the skin immediately overlying a trigger point. This is rarely painful and is a very effective treatment for musculoskeletal pain. It often takes several sessions in close succession for the effects to build.

Footwear Education

What we wear on our feet greatly affects foot function and therefore, foot health. Incorrectly fitted shoes can cause problems with blisters, corns, calluses and joint and muscle aches and pain. It’s important to our podiatrists they educate and inform you on the best footwear options, providing recommendations and discussing with you the ideal features to look for in shoes, which can differ from person to person.

We have a selection of podiatrist recommended shoes from Revere, Vionic, Dr Comfort, and more. Simply pop in to discuss this or make a time to have your shoes correctly sized and we can assist you with your selection according to your needs.
